IOI-NIGERIA MARKS WORLD OCEAN DAY 2026

The International Ocean Institute, Nigeria Centre, in collaboration with the Nigerian Institute for Oceanography and Marine Research, has marked the World Ocean Day 2026 with a renewed call for sustainable ocean governance and responsible Blue Economy development.

Held in Lagos under the global theme, “Reimagine: Beyond the World We Know, A New Relationship with Our Ocean,” the event brought together maritime stakeholders, researchers, policymakers, students, and ocean advocates.

In his welcome address, Director of the International Ocean Institute Nigeria Centre, Akanbi Williams, said Nigeria must embrace innovative and sustainable approaches to ocean governance to fully realise the opportunities of the Blue Economy while protecting marine ecosystems for future generations.

The Executive Director NIOMR, Professor Abiodun Sule represented by Dr Jumoke Edun, the Director of Research reaffirmed the Institute's commitment to scientific research, ocean literacy, and evidence-based policies that support the sustainable management of Nigeria's marine resources.

Delivering the keynote lecture titled “Reimagining the Blue Economy: Achieving Sustainable Prosperity with the Ocean,” Ubong Essien, Founder of Blue Economy Nigeria, called for a national emergency on ocean literacy and Blue Economy awareness, noting that Nigeria must deepen public understanding of the ocean to unlock its vast economic potential.

The celebration also featured art presentations by students under the UNESCO Blue Schools Global Network, Nigeria, through the #MyOceanMyAction challenge demonstrating the vital role young people play in shaping the future of the Blue Economy. Stakeholders agreed that stronger partnerships, investment in ocean science, and increased public awareness are essential to securing a sustainable ocean future for Nigeria.
